CULTURAL TABOO

Today our subject is about taboos. A taboo is a vehement prohibition of an action based on belief that such behavior is either too sacred or too accursed for ordinary individuals to undertake, under threat of supernatural punishment. These taboos are sometimes quite weird to be applied in modern day and sometimes are a little bit superstitious.

Too many taboo that has been presented to us, especially when we were children. As i child, I always wondered whether the prohibition is true or plot. Before puberty at that time,I certainly will not be able to know the truth.

Here are some examples of taboos that i have heard :

  1. In Thailand and in Arab countries never point ypur shoe/foot to another person. The shoe/foot is the unclean part of your body.
  2. In Thailand, don't touch the head of someone older than you.
  3. Do not sing in the kitchen,or you will marry with someone who is older than you.
  4. Do not point finger towards the rainbow, the consequences of your finger will be crippled.
  5. Do not sit on the pillow ,less infected boils around the anus.
  6. Do not open an umbrella in the house, lest the snake will enter the house

Actually too much taboo and customs  that do not make sense that can be found in the traditions of our society. But behind the trickery in the forbidden taboo, there are many lessons we can learn from it. In conclusion, taboo and tradition in our society seems to resemble the teaching of errors, but actually implied a very valuable lesson.
